Data Files

These files are SPSS files and can only be 'read' using the SPSS software. If you do not have the software, SPSS is available in the CASA computer lab, on library laptops available for check out, and in the open access area of the student success center (on the ground floor of Clark Hall).  These files are used for analysis exercises throughout the course. Hence, many have errors purposefully placed there for you to find and correct.

Balance Datafile Name: balance.sav

Abstract: Is it harder to maintain your balance while you are concentrating? Nine elderly (6 men and 3 women) and eight young men were subjects in this experiment. Each subject stood barefoot on a "force platform" and was asked to maintain a stable upright position and to react as quickly as possible to an unpredictable noise by pressing a hand held button. The noise came randomly and the subject concentrated on reacting as quickly as possible. The platform automatically measured how much each subject swayed in millimeters in both the forward/backward and the side-to-side directions.

Description of Data File: Data gives the amount of forward/backward and side/side sway experienced by two groups of subjects (young and elderly) while taking part in a reaction time test.

Calcium Datafile Name: calcium.sav

Abstract: Does increasing calcium intake reduce blood pressure? Observational studies suggest that there is a link, and that it is strongest in African-American men. Twenty-one African-American men participated in an experiment to test this hypothesis. Ten of the men took a calcium supplement for 12 weeks while the remaining 11 men recieved a placebo. Researchers measured the blood pressure of each subject before and after the 12-week period. The experiment was double-blind.

Description of Data File: Results of a randomized comparative experiment to investigate the effect of calcium on blood pressure in African-American men. A treatment group of 10 men received a calcium supplement for 12 weeks, and a control group of 11 men received a placebo during the same period. All subjects had their blood pressure tested before and after the 12-week period.

Cereals Datafile Namecereals_2014.sav

Abstract: This datafile contains nutritional information and grocery shelf location for 77 breakfast cereals. Current research states that adults should consume no more than 30% of their calories in the form of fat, they need about 50 grams (women) or 63 grams (men) of protein daily, and should provide for the remainder of their caloric intake with complex carbohydrates. One gram of fat contains 9 calories and carbohydrates and proteins contain 4 calories per gram. A "good" diet should also contain 20-35 grams of dietary fiber.

The data include cereal name, cereal manufacturer, type (hot or cold), number of calories per serving, grams of protein, grams of fat, milligrams of sodium, grams of fiber, grams of carbohydrates, grams of sugars, milligrams of potassium, typical percentage of the FDA's RDA of vitamins, the weight of one serving, the number of cups in one serving, and the shelf location (1,2 or 3 for bottom, middle or top).

A variable named "rating" was calculated by Consumer Reports.

Heart Rate - Stepping Datafile Namestepping.sav

Abstract: Students at The Ohio State University conducted an experiment to explore the effect of two factors, step height and rate of stepping, on the subject's heart rate. They tested the effects of two different step heights crossed with three different stepping speeds, for a total of 6 different treatment combinations. In addition, they used six different subject/experimenter combinations as blocks.

Description of Data File: An experiment was conducted by students at The Ohio State University in the fall of 1993 to explore the nature of the relationship between a person's heart rate and the frequency at which that person stepped up and down on steps of various heights. The response variable, heart rate, was measured in beats per minute. There were two different step heights: 5.75 inches (coded as 0), and 11.5 inches (coded as 1). There were three rates of stepping: 14 steps/min. (coded as 0), 21 steps/min. (coded as 1), and 28 steps/min. (coded as 2). This resulted in six possible height/frequency combinations. Each subject performed the activity for three minutes. Subjects were kept on pace by the beat of an electric metronome. One experimenter counted the subject's pulse for 20 seconds before and after each trial. The subject always rested between trials until her or his heart rate returned to close to the beginning rate. Another experimenter kept track of the time spent stepping. Each subject was always measured and timed by the same pair of experimenters to reduce variability in the experiment. Each pair of experimenters was treated as a block.

Popularity Datafile Name: popularity.sav

Abstract: The subjects, students in grades 4-6 in selected schools in Michigan, were asked the following question:

What would you most like to do at school?

Demographic information was also collected for each student.

Description of Data File: Students in grades 4-6 from three school districts in Ingham and Clinton Counties, Michigan. Chase and Dummer stratified their sample, selecting students from urban, suburban, and rural school districts with approximately 1/3 of their sample coming from each district. Students indicated whether good grades, athletic ability, or popularity was most important to them. They also ranked four factors: grades, sports, looks, and money, in order of their importance for popularity. The questionnaire also asked for gender, grade level, and other demographic information.

Track Datafile Name: track.sav

Abstract: This dataset contains the gold medal performances in the men's long jump, high jump and discus throw for the modern Olympic games from 1900 to 1984. Data are also provided for the 1896 Olympics, but one may wish to omit them from the analyses because that Olympics was quite different from later ones.

It has been suggested that the Mexico City Olympics in 1968 saw unusually good track and field performances, possibly because of the high altitude.

Description of Data File: Gold Medal performance in several Track and Field events. The gold medal performance in the men's long jump, shot put, and high jump (measured in inches) for the modern Olympic series starting in 1900.

The Olympics in 1896 are included for reference but identified with a 'non-year' value (value = -4) so that year's values can be made missing values prior to analysis.

TTC Badminton Datafile Name: ttc_badminton.sav

Abstract: This file contains scores from a TTC (success criterion = 5) test of badminton serve accuracy. TTC stands for trials-to-criterion. The way a TTC test works is examinees continue the task (in this case badminton serves) until they reach the number of success specified as the success criterion. So, if the success criterion is 5 and you make 5 successful serves in a row, then that's a perfect score. As individuals take more and more serves to reach 5 their score represents poorer performance. So, A low score is good for scores from a TTC test.
